Poultry as a Livelihood Opportunity :Suguna Foods: Taking Poultry Production to Scale for Commercial Farmers

Suguna Foods has completely changed the game for poultry farmers in India. By introducing contract farming, the company has helped thousands of farmers earn a stable income without worrying about market ups and downs. What started as a small family-run farm in Tamil Nadu has now grown into a ₹9,000 crore business, working with 40,000 farmers across 19 states and supplying 15% of India’s poultry market. Suguna’s Poultry Integration Model takes care of everything—farmers get chicks, feed, and veterinary support, while Suguna guarantees to buy back the grown birds. This means farmers can focus on raising healthy chickens instead of worrying about selling them at a good price.

Back in the 1980s, B. Soundararajan and his brother G.B. Sundararajan saw how farmers struggled with inconsistent supplies and unpredictable poultry prices. They started by selling poultry inputs, then realized they could go further—if farmers were provided with everything they needed upfront, they could produce at scale with less risk. This idea led to their contract farming model, which allowed thousands of small and medium farmers to run successful poultry businesses.

To ensure consistent quality and supply, Suguna built its own feed mills, hatcheries, and vaccine production units, reducing reliance on outside suppliers. They expanded to Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Africa, proving that their model works beyond India.

Today, many Suguna farmers earn between ₹1–3 lakh a year, a significant boost compared to traditional farming. By offering stability, support, and financial security, Suguna has made poultry farming a viable and profitable livelihood. With plans for more expansion and tech-driven improvements, Suguna is set to remain a leader in the industry for years to come.
