This issue of Policy Watch focuses on the theme of Environment, Natural Resources, and Sustainability. It features six articles addressing diverse environmental challenges and responses. The first article, by Ridhi Shah of EdelGive Foundation, originally published on IDR Online, covers the COP26 summit held in Glasgow (Oct 31–Nov 12, 2021), emphasizing the importance of this event in shaping future global climate action.
The second article, published on Founding Fuel by Arun Maira, critiques over-reliance on numbers and economic self-interest to tackle climate change. Maira stresses the value of social consensus and deep listening, even to those we disagree with, and advocates cooperation over competition in solving complex issues.
The third article presents an RGICS-commissioned study on localized groundwater management, being undertaken in ten states in collaboration with NGOs and experts. It explores causes of groundwater mismanagement and seeks to document successful conservation practices.
The fourth article summarizes concerns raised by civil society regarding proposed amendments to the Forest Conservation Act, 1980. Compiled by the Campaign for Survival and Dignity (Odisha), it warns that these changes may compromise forest protection and harm forest-dependent communities.
The fifth article, authored by B.S. Sidhu and Ritesh Bhatia, details a study on stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana by the India Paryavaran Sahayak Foundation, commissioned by the Punjab State Farmers’ and Farm Workers’ Commission.
The final article, an Op-Ed by Prasanth Regy (NITI Aayog), reflects on the Texas power crisis and underscores the need for climate-resilient infrastructure, balancing resilience with economic trade-offs.
