India has a massive trade deficit with China—$63.04 billion—because we import far more than we export. The study explores how we can manufacture some of these imported Chinese goods in India, not just to balance trade but also to create jobs. Key sectors like machinery, electronics, textiles, plastics, and rubber have been identified as areas where local production can work. The paper suggests that attracting Chinese investments through joint ventures and policy incentives could help. However, roadblocks like complex regulations, tough visa policies for Chinese investors, and high costs need to be addressed.
Launched in late 2018, this study aims to build a roadmap for shifting the production of certain Chinese goods to India, aligning with the Make in India initiative. Researchers analyzed trade data, studied manufacturing feasibility, and spoke with industry experts to shortlist 57 product categories across five key sectors that could be made locally.
Several Chinese companies—like Xiaomi, Lenovo, and Haier—have already set up manufacturing in India, showing that the interest is there. However, investors struggle with bureaucratic red tape, strict labor laws, and short visa durations. The report suggests India needs to make it easier for Chinese businesses to invest and operate.
If India plays its cards right, it can attract Chinese investment into MSME-driven clusters, electronics, and textiles, among other industries. Policies should be fine-tuned to encourage manufacturing, including dedicated Chinese Industrial Parks and incentives for foreign investors.
If India can fix policy bottlenecks and create a business-friendly environment, we could manufacture more locally, reduce dependency on China, create millions of jobs, and strengthen our economy.
