Mizoram faces a triple crisis: environmental degradation, social disparities, and economic vulnerabilities. Environmental concerns include deforestation, water scarcity, soil erosion, and the adverse impacts of climate change, such as glacial retreat and increased frequency of extreme weather events. Socially, the state grapples with issues like inadequate healthcare, educational disparities, and limited access to essential services in remote areas. Economically, while sectors like tourism and hydropower have contributed to growth, there remains a heavy reliance on agriculture, which is increasingly unsustainable due to changing climatic conditions and land degradation.
To address these interconnected challenges, the report advocates for a “NEW” strategy—Nature regeneration, Enabling human, social, and institutional development, and fostering a Well-being economy. Nature regeneration emphasizes the restoration and sustainable management of water resources, forests, land, and climate resilience. Enabling development focuses on enhancing human capital through improved nutrition, healthcare, education, and institutional capacities. The well-being economy component aims to diversify economic activities by promoting green enterprises, sustainable tourism, and value-added agricultural practices, thereby reducing overdependence on traditional sectors.
The report underscores the necessity for integrated policy approaches, community participation, and leveraging climate finance to implement these strategies effectively. By adopting this holistic framework, Mizoram can navigate its current crises and pave the way for a resilient and inclusive future.
