The story of Dhulagori Adarsha Vidyalaya (DAV) is one of perseverance, leadership, and the power of education to change lives. When Debasish Mandal took charge as headmaster in 2014, he walked into a school in disrepair—both physically and academically. The classrooms were empty, teachers were often absent, and corruption ran deep, especially in the mid-day meal scheme. But instead of walking away, Mandal chose to fight. Through sheer determination, he cleaned up the system, inspired his students, and won over the community.
The road was anything but easy. Corrupt management fought back, even resorting to threats and intimidation. Teachers resisted change, and students lacked motivation. The school had a reputation for failure, and many had given up hope. But Mandal believed that every child deserved a fair shot at education, and he refused to back down.
Mandal knew rote learning wouldn’t inspire his students. Instead, he introduced hands-on, creative teaching methods. Kids started making short films, participating in photography workshops, and engaging in environmental projects. Music, dance, and storytelling became a part of everyday learning. The school became a place of excitement, not boredom.
Over the years, DAV transformed. Enrollment increased, students excelled in competitions, and corruption was wiped out. More importantly, students gained confidence, skills, and a love for learning. While challenges remain, the story of DAV proves that one person’s passion can ignite change, even in the toughest circumstances. Today, it stands as a symbol of hope for government schools everywhere.
